Whistleblower

The False Claims Act is a federal law designed to prevent fraud perpetrated against the federal government. Under the statute’s qui tam provisions, whistleblowers may file False Claims Act lawsuits against corporations or individuals that defraud the government. In exchange for exposing fraud against the government, successful whistleblowers are financially rewarded for filing their lawsuits and may be entitled to a reward of 15 percent to 25 percent of what the government recovers if the government joins the case, or 25 percent to 30 percent of the recovery if the government chooses not to join the lawsuit, depending on the contributions to the case made by the whistleblower and his or her attorneys.

The laws of several states, including California, also provide for whistleblower actions, and whistleblowers may be eligible to recover money from defendants who commit fraud against state and local governments.
